Olympia police have arrested a 19-year-old man accused of injuring his two-month-old son.
Lt. Jim Costa says Shane D. Olsen was left home alone to care for the boy on July 6 while the child’s mother was working.
The baby was first taken to Capital Medical Center and immediately flown to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma with life threatening injuries.
Three Olympia detectives were sent to the hospital around midnight after hospital staff determined the baby’s injuries were not accidental.
According to court papers, doctors found multiple skull fractures, multiple rib fractures and a broken leg that was already healing. Doctors believe a large portion of the baby’s brain is dead and it is unknown if he will ever breathe on his own.
After telling police multiple versions of the night’s events and failing a polygraph test, Olsen admitted to investigators that he had tripped over a dog, falling to floor and hitting the baby’s head on the ground.
Olsen then became frustrated with the baby’s crying and slammed him down on the floor. When the baby continued to cry, Olsen threw him on to a couch from four or five feet away.
The couple and the baby were staying with the mother's sister at an apartment on Olympia's west side when the abuse occurred.
Olsen was arrested on Friday and will made his first appearance in court Monday afternoon.
