Overnight winds cause new power outages

Gusty winds that blew through Western Washington Tuesday night and early Wednesday added more power outages as utility crews are still trying to restore service to customers who have been in the dark since last week's snow and ice storms.

Puget Sound Energy reports 38,000 new outages, mostly in Whatcom, Skagit, Island and Kitsap counties. Spokesman Roger Thompson says crews have restored all but 10,000 of those and the utility hopes to have them back on line Wednesday.

Meanwhile, PSE crews also hope to finish restoring service Wednesday to about 12,000 snow and ice outages, mostly in King, Pierce and Thurston counties.

Seattle City Light reported the overnight winds left about 7,500 customers in the dark, but by 7 a.m. only a dozen customers were still without power.

PSE hopes to have outages restored by Thursday

A Puget Sound Energy spokesman says the utility hopes to have most of the out-of-service customers back on line Wednesday with no more than scattered outages remaining Thursday.

By Tuesday afternoon it still had about 22,000 to go, mostly in the south Puget Sound region.

Spokesman Roger Thompson 280 line crews are working their way through neighborhoods in south King, Pierce and Thurston counties, making repairs that sometime restore only one or two customers at a time.

Last week's snow and ice storms knocked out nearly 400,000 customers or more than a third of PSE's 1.1 million electrical customers in Western Washington.

Thompson says, "This has been a monster."

Storm halts howling at Thurston County wolf sanctuary

Storm halts howling at Thurston County wolf sanctuary

Last week’s snow and ice storms have devastated a popular wolf sanctuary in Thurston County.

Wolf Haven International in Tenino sustained an estimated $40,000 in damage, said Wolf Haven’s communications director Kim Young.

The 50 wolves and staff at the 83-acre complex avoided injury, but trees, fences and a surveillance system took a beating.
